Replacing lost, stolen or damaged British Passports from the USA
How do I replace my lost British passport?
The first step is to report your lost British passport to the local police where you are. You will need to obtain a police report.
You may be required to provide certain supporting documentation or information to obtain a new UK passport and this often causes a bit of a delay in the application process. We therefore recommend that you plan on staying in place for an additional few days so that you can get all the documents you need and have plenty of time to apply for your new passport.
Other than that, the process is more or less the same as if you are applying for or renewing your British passport and the timeframe is also the same.
If you need to travel in the next few days, you will need to apply for an emergency travel document which functions in the same way as a passport.
How quickly can I replace a lost UK passport?
If you do not have imminent travel plans, you won’t need to apply for an emergency travel document and you can apply for a replacement passport.
It should take from 3 to 4 weeks to obtain your new passport. It could take longer than this, depending on how busy HM Passport office is at the time.
How do I report a lost UK passport?
This is a 2-step process. If you suspect that your passport was stolen, you will need to notify your local police station and request an original police report.
If you need to travel in the next few weeks, there will not be enough time to apply for and receive a new UK passport. In this case, you will need to apply for an emergency travel document. This application can be done at the British Embassy, High Commission or Consulate in your area and it should only take a few working days.
It will need to be accompanied by your complete and intended travel itinerary, along with supporting documents (e.g. your confirmed airline tickets and any hotel reservations). Once received, you will only be able to travel according to the details on your emergency travel document. You will then need to apply for a standard British passport renewal from USA for your new passport.
