Additional Notes:

• If you have never had a British passport before then Click “NEXT” and proceed.
• If your British passport was issued or expired a long time ago, the process will be similar to applying for a passport for the first time. Please re-select ‘British Passport Renewal’ above, as you have previously held a British passport.
• Special note for applicants born in South Africa – First-time applications. ONLY a vault birth certificate of the applicant will be accepted if the applicant was born in South Africa. A vault birth certificate is a copy of the original registration form completed by the parents when a birth was registered. It is a photocopy of the original, stamped and signed by a Department of Home Affairs Officer (an applicant’s computer printed unabridged birth certificate will be accepted ONLY IF it was issued within 12 months of birth). All other first-time application certificates for parents and marriage certificates can be computer printed.

You are eligible for a First-time British passport because you were naturalised in the United Kingdom.

You are eligible for a First-time British passport because you as well as one or both of your parents were born in the United Kingdom.

The following is applicable when you (applicant) were born in the UK but your parents were both born outside the UK.

Applicants born before 1 January 1983

If you were born in the UK before 1 January 1983 you automatically qualify for a British Passport no matter if your parents were born in or outside the UK.

Applicants born after 1 January 1983

If you were born in the UK after 1 January 1983 you do not automatically qualify for British citizenship.
It depends whether your parent/s were legally in the UK on a work or study visa at the time of your birth. If this is applicable, then you will need to submit supporting documents as proof.
However, if you were born in the UK after 1 January 1983 and your parents were in the UK as tourists or illegally, then you do not qualify for British citizenship.

You are eligible for a First-time British passport because both your parents were born in the United Kingdom.

You are eligible for a First-time British passport because you were born before 1 January 1983.

The following is applicable when claiming British citizenship through a British born mother:

Applicants born before 1 January 1983

British law requires that an applicant’s birth needs to be registered with the British authorities before applying for a first-time passport, if the applicant was born outside the United Kingdom before 1 January 1983 to a British born mother and never had a British passport before.

Applicants born after 1 January 1983

Birth registrations are not applicable if the applicant was born outside the United Kingdom after 1 January 1983 to a British born mother. Therefore, the applicant is eligible for a British passport without registering his/her birth.

You are eligible for a first-time British passport because your birth was already registered with the British authorities.

You are eligible for a first-time British passport without registering your birth.

British law requires that your birth needs to be registered with the British authorities before a first-time passport application can be submitted, if you were born before 1 January 1983.

The following is applicable when claiming British citizenship through a British naturalised father.

The applicant, the child of the naturalised father, must have been born after the father’s naturalisation. If born before the father’s naturalisation then the applicant/child is not eligible for a British passport.

Applicants born before 1 July 2006

British law requires that an applicant’s birth needs to be registered with the British authorities before applying for a first-time passport, if the applicant’s parents were never married to each other, at any point, before or after the applicant’s birth.

If the applicant’s parents were married to each other at any point, before or after the applicant’s birth, then a birth registration is not applicable and the applicant can apply for a British passport without a birth registration.

Applicants born after 1 July 2006

Birth registrations are not applicable if the applicant was born outside the United Kingdom after 1 July 2006. Therefore, the applicant is eligible for a British passport without registering his/her birth.

British law requires that your birth needs to be registered with the British authorities before your first-time passport application can be submitted, if your parents were not married at any point.

• Lost/Stolen/Damaged passport replacements – 4 to 6 weeks or sooner
